India has enormous market potential because of its population demographics and increasing digital adoption

-Mrunali Parikh, Investment Analyst at Tanas Capital.

Team 100X interviewed some of the top investors across the globe about their venture investing journeys, startups, and India. Here, Mrunali Parikh, Investment Analyst at Tanas Capital shares her responses.

  1. What is your motivation to be in venture investing business?

The thrill of finding and promoting innovative ideas that have the potential to transform industries and generate enormous value is what keeps me in the venture investing business. I'm passionate about promoting entrepreneurship, staying on the cutting edge of technology developments, and backing visionary founders and their start-ups shape the future.

  1. Describe your workday and leisure day, how does it look like.

Workday: A typical workday involves talking to different founders and understanding their business model, sitting with the portfolio companies for MIS tracking and strategy discussions, and reading & researching the industry trends.

Leisure Day: On a leisure day, I like to spend time with my friends and family, explore new food places, or will do Netflix and chill.

  1. What is your view on the future of India as a market?

India has enormous market potential because of its population demographics and increasing digital adoption. India is poised to become a worldwide hotspot for tech-driven solutions across various sectors. The Indian tech talent has the potential to build globally scaleable solutions since there is right pool of capital available due to the increase in the early-stage venture funding.

  1. Help describe your investment thesis and ideas you would like to back.

Finding businesses with strong visionary founders, revolutionary technology or approach, a scaleable business model, and a clear path to market leadership is the core of my investing thesis. However, Sustainable Unit Economics is an equally important criterion for investing.

  1. What are your 5 key learnings from your experience as a venture investor.

  1. You are not investing in the business, rather you are investing in the founder its vision and passion.

  1. Change is the only constant and hence pivoting the business and model is important to sustain the market

  1. Each and every company needs to have the strongest marketing plan and strategy in place. Even the strongest technology/product will fail if the marketing plan is not right. Marketing strategy is the only long-term moat in the business.

  1. Network and building relationships with founders, investors, and bankers in the ecosystem is very very important.

  1. Mention top 5 consumer/industry/technology trends in India and globally.

  1. Generative Tech and Artificial Intelligence (Globally)

  1. Advertising and Media Tech (Globally)

  1. Food Staples and ready-to-cook food in consumer products (India)

  1. Pre School and Day Care in the early child education Industry (India)

  1. Fin-Tech (Payments and Investments)

  1. Top 5 advice you would give to startup founder.

  1. Build a business that has to stay relevant 10-20 years down the line as well.

  1. The first 12 people who join your startup, should be the ones aligned with the vision of the company

  1. First round of investment should come from friends and family only

  1. Competition shows that you are doing something right

  1. Start with a big share of a small market and going forward include the offerings to expand the market.

  1. How do you support your portfolio companies?

We are an equity partner that brings more than money to the relationship. With deep in-house expertise, we provide the support to accelerate growth creation in our portfolio companies through strategic clarity, prioritization, capital allocation, and capability building. We work closely with our companies to identify any low hanging opportunities for improving efficiencies, increasing productivity and driving superior cash flows. We leverage our experience to guide companies on the right cadence for improvements in systems, processes and governance as they rapidly scale up.

  1. Which of your portfolio company you are very excited about and why:

Tanas has invested in one of the new-age Marketing tech companies – Wondrlab. It is a platform-first startup with 360-degree marketing operations covered. It is the most exciting investment because brand positioning is the most important aspect for any brand nowadays, as consumers have become very conscious. This shows an increasing market opportunity and with the right team, it has all the reasons to become successful.

  1. When you started your career what were your ambitions

I started my career in 2021, by working in corporate finance advisory firm – Bakertilly DHC. Where I use to closely work with the finance team of the corporate houses. After this, I joined GVFL – an early- stage venture fund backed by Government of Gujarat, and worked on a couple of early-stage deals. After working there for around 2 years, I joined Tanas Capital – A mid-market private investment firm.
